As more and more baby boomers retire, many are not looking at retirement the same way their parents did. Having spent many years raising families in the suburbs, they now are looking for hip communities that can accommodate their new lifestyle as an active senior.

Baby boomers have a higher percentage of homeownership than the national average, some owning multiple properties. They are a very sophisticated group of buyers and they love choices, amenities and a maintenance free environment. According to a 2006 study conducted by the National Association of Realtors, findings showed that 25% of boomers were not satisfied with their current homes. Anticipating that many boomers would be on the move, many in the real estate industry raced to meet the preferences and needs of this dynamic group of buyers.

In a recent awards ceremony, the National Association of Home Builders recognized the most outstanding work in the 50+ housing industry held in conjunction with the association’s Building for Boomers & Beyond: 50+ Housing Symposium 2007 in Denver. Many communities and industry leaders throughout the U.S. were recognized and Denver area developments and firms were among the winners.

 

One Cherry Lane took the silver award in home design for active adult housing over 2,400 sq ft. Lincoln Square Lofts was presented with the gold award for excellence in attached unit design for active adult housing as well. And Denver-based Kephart Community Planning Architecture was awarded several awards for excellence for projects in Colorado as well as other parts of the U.S.
