Denver Teens get a Lesson in Real Estate

When many of us decided to purchase our first homes, we soon found out that we had a lot to learn. From the various types of loans available to the details of a standard real estate contract, the process was overwhelming for many of us to say the least.
But many Denver youth won’t have to mount the same hurdles when it’s time for them to purchase their first home. It’s Your Move, an innovative program designed by the Colorado Association of REALTORS® is teaching Denver’s teenagers critical lessons about real estate. Participants will be exposed to a variety of topics including: what to look for when shopping for a place to live; tenant rights and responsibilities; housing discrimination; landlord rights and responsibilities; property values; leases; contracts; and the types of loans available for housing.
For years many large organizations including the National Association of Realtors and the National Association of Homebuilders have conducted campaigns to get children interested in real estate. These programs have been instrumental in helping youth learn valuable real estate and economic principles that hopefully will carry over into adulthood. Additionally, the programs have encouraged kids to be more vocal when their parents are in the process of making major housing decisions.
It’s Your Move is being offered in public high schools throughout the state to juniors and seniors. The Colorado Association of REALTORS® provides the program materials to teachers in the school systems and it’s free to schools and students who participate.
Teachers, parents and students interested in learning more about It’s Your Move can contact the Colorado Association of REALTORS® at (303) 790-7099 to find out more information about the program.
