Dispelling The Myths of High-Priced Urban Living in Denver

Across the U.S., developers are capitalizing on the trend of live-work-play communities and building stylish, contemporary homes within walking distance of city centers. Residents who take advantage of these new developments enjoy the best in entertainment, dining, shopping, and more, all in reach of their homes and jobs. As an added benefit, many are able to save time and money as commute times and gas prices steadily rise across the nation.

But while the convenience of urban living to some can prove to be invaluable, the cost of living in most major cities has grown considerably. And with the rapid growth in these areas, the cost to keep up with housing trends in some cities is simply too expensive for many potential buyers. While the interest is there, many who might benefit from in-town living discard the notion due to the perceived cost of the area.

But in Denver, unlike many large cities, builders are focusing on affordability as live-work-play communities and mixed-use developments spring up in the downtown area. The Nicholas Project recently broke ground on Spire, an impressive condominium development in downtown Denver. With 503 units starting in the $200s, when completed the building will be one of the area’s tallest and prominent structures. But what’s more impressive than the size of the structure is the price. The Nicholas Project cites Spire as one of the more affordable living options in the downtown area.

And there are lots of options available at lower price points as well. According to the Downtown Denver Partnership, Inc. condos, duplexes and townhomes in center city neighborhoods start in the $120s. Additionally, developments have condos reserved for income-qualifying households (generally, $44,000-$55,000 for a two-person household.)

More than 62,000 residents enjoy the convenience of living within a 1.5 mile radius of Downtown’s center as more and more Denver residents are learning that urban living can be affordable, kid-friendly and meet all of the needs once met by suburban living. Options range from high density to low density and from tree-lined streets to the skyscraper-lined corridors of the central business district.

If you’ve ever thought downtown living might be the option for you, there’s no better time to make downtown Denver your home.
